Desertec, the 13-company coalition that hopes to organise a major network of MENA region solar arrays and wind farms to export power to Europe, is in talks with Morocco for its first project.

The first plant is to be a concentrated solar power plant at an undisclosed location in the Northwest African country, according to MEED, the London-based Middle East business intelligence publication.

MEED also said that the 13 mostly German founder companies comprising Desertec would shortly be joined by four or five additional shareholders. Desertec has said the newcomers would be energy and technology firms based in Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Italy and France, increasing the group's chances of winning government support for its ambitious project.
