Well, technically it’s not Alex Ferguson Street and technically you could always drive on it, but at least now there’s a sign many Manchester United fans will no doubt take Facebook pictures in front of.
What used to be Water’s Reach, a short stretch of road connecting Wharfside Way and Trafford Wharf Road quite close to Old Trafford (seen on the map below), will now be known as Sir Alex Ferguson Way.
Sir Alex noted that when he took over United in 1986, he had “little idea” of what awaited him. Which, considering he actually literally wound up putting his name on the map, is pretty believable.
“I am delighted to accept this honour from Trafford Council. When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little idea of the journey that awaited me. Over quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford, and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name, is truly humbling,” he said.
No word yet on whether a David Moyes Lane is in the works.
