After the glits and the glamour of the Dubai World Cup, it seems a good time to look at the wonderful human moments that happen off track.

2012: Staff photos of the Year

Very early in the week I spent reviewing the 44,000 plus images shot by our staff photographers in 2012 I realised that the best presentation I could offer to you, the reader and viewer, was not to force these images in to pre-ordained categories or set arbitrary quotas on number of images from one photographer, place or event to another. Rather, I should simply offer the images that I believe you will connect with, that will give you an emotional response as they did me.

Behind the curtain

For more than 2,000 years the traditional art form of acrobatics has graced China. Recently that art was brought to the UAE in the form of the Chinese State Circus. Yet the circus is anything but a traditional circus. Instead of elephants, tigers and lions the audience who packed the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre earlier this month were treated to thrilling performances from the world’s finest acrobats.

There seems to be a lot of talk around at the moment as to whether Instagram is the future of photo journalism or the death of photography as we know it.

Al Rams: A community facing an uncertain future

Al Rams is a small northern town in Ras Al Khaimah, lying on a thin strip of land between the Hajjar mountains and the ocean. It has a vibrant history based on the pearl divers of yesteryear and a tradition of fishing that continues today.

Eid Al Fitr in the UAE

Ramadan culminates with the three-day Eid Al Fitr holiday celebrating the end of the fast. Marked by a special morning prayer, the day is a form of spiritual graduation and a chance to permanently implement the spiritual lessons learnt throughout the month.

Focal Point: Beach Volleyball

As we hit the halfway point of the 2012 Olympic Games, televisions and newspapers are awash with stunning photographs showing human athleticism at its best. This beach volleyball photo shot by Antonie Robertson on a beach in Dubai may not match the glamour of London’s Horse Guards Parade, but it captures a sporting moment wonderfully. The fishing pots frame the shot brilliantly, and also give a sense of identity to the fisherman relaxing as the sun goes down.
