I had passed it a few times when we had gone on an outing to the mukhtar [Maqta], the guard post at the end of the island.”“Nowadays it has been rebuilt … then it was a large, plain but imposing building, four square with turrets on the corners, of two storeys around two courtyards. Constructed of coral blocks and whitewashed, it dominated the town.”
