I was very excited to hear last weekend that I would be going to Monster Jam. As you all should know by now, I am obsessed with cars.
I love trucks, especially the giant monstrous ones, so I took the event as an opportunity to research the engines, body kits and tyres of the beasts.
Sadly, it proved to be a disappointment to me and to my cousin, who came with me. As soon as we got to Zayed Sports City Stadium, where the show was being held, we noticed the crowds. Children were holding giant skull cups filled with slushies, and the inner child in me had to have one.
So we got the tickets and then started looking around for the slush machines, which turned out to be giant ice coolers, topped with cheap syrup. Disappointment number one!
After more than two hours under Abu Dhabi’s heat, humidity and scorching sun, I was ready to leave then but had to see the great trucks. As we got seated, my cousin and I waited impatiently for the show to start.
Two commentators took their place on the stadium and started describing the truck and the event, which proved extremely boring and irrelevant. Most people in the event brought in their children, but I don’t think an 8-year-old would understand the process of car making, much less what nitrogen does to the engine.
After about 20 minutes, the trucks started coming into the stadium, and the crowd went wild screaming and hooting. As for me, I was having an adrenaline rush on my own and so was my cousin.
The sound of the engines alone was blocking the screams of the hundreds in the audience, and I thought the event was worth the wait under the heat.
I sat anticipating the trucks to move, jump, and wreck some cars; but it didn’t happen. They jumped off the ‘dunes’ but that wasn’t special; it wasn’t even as amazing as the videos I have seen online. After that, it was back to boredom. The trucks took forever to accelerate, and the commentators were talking non-stop but I had no idea what they were saying.
My cousin and I stayed for an hour and a half, then decided to leave because we were just not feeling the excitement anymore. Before leaving the stadium, I bought two mini Monster Jam truck toys for my nephews, at least they will get to enjoy their own private shows at home.
