One hundred years of fashion illustrations and photography will going up on display in Sharjah Art Museum this week. The collection is that of Martin Fervers, a German art collector who is intrigued by the process of documentation and interpretation. “Impressive photographic motifs appealed to my inner being and summoned feelings within me that made me yearn for more,” he explains. “Intellectual stimulation gained from reading and thinking about photography and its artists certainly played a significant role and as the act of collecting the art grew, I naturally became ever increasingly bound to it.”
The illustrations are come from the greatest haute couture fashion designers of the 20th century such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian and there is a large selection of work by American fashion photographer and fashion illustrator David Croland. A collection of transparencies and negatives completes the exhibition, of interest to Fervers because they represent “the true origin of photography”.
