Chromograph by Kelly Wearstler
There’s nothing like a good rug to finish off an interior. You can use them to define areas, break up open-plan spaces, introduce colour or pattern into a neutral scheme, or warm up a minimal interior. The problem is, finding decent rugs in the UAE can be a bit of a challenge. There’s plenty of the beautifully intricate Persian variety around and, at the other end of the spectrum, lots of beige shag pile to be had, but if you’re looking for something a little bit different, it can be a struggle.

In last weekend’s edition of House & Home, we introduced you to the fabulous pop artist Maria Iqbal. Iqbal, who was born in Afghanistan and raised in Dubai, went on to spend ten years working in advertising in the US and India. But, recognising that the advertising industry would never give her the kind of creative fulfillment she was looking for, last year Iqbal packed in her job, returned to the UAE and launched the Maria Iqbal furniture and accessories brand. You go girl!

This Friday’s House & Home section features a fabulous Caribbean getaway belonging to American couple Melody and Jon Dill. The Dills had been visiting Anguilla in the British West Indies for 20 years before they started construction of their stunning, four-bedroom holiday home. They were very clear about what they wanted – their new home had to be walking distance from the beach, have expansive sea views, allow for both interior and exterior living, and offer a tropical ambience.

Popular IKEA pieces such as the PAX wardrobe are being repurposed by a new breed of IKEA Hackers. Image courtesy of IKEA. Hacking is an ominous word usually associated with illegally gaining access to computer systems. It conjures up images of covert programmers unleashing nightmarish viruses that eat their way through email contact lists. But there is a completely separate type of hacking currently gaining in popularity, and it relates to home décor. IKEA Hacking is sometimes described as “consumer product intervention” but it is essentially a form of repurposing, which involves customers altering the end use of [...]

The new Objects & Elements showroom is one of my favourite places to shop in Dubai. The 6,000 square foot space is tucked into a corner of Al Quoz and brimming with fabulous finds. The company’s founder, Claudia Granberg, lives in Dubai but sources all her products from Indonesia, and can often be found zipping around Bali on the back of her bike, looking for new additions to the collection. There’s a sale on at the showroom until the end of May, with discounts of up to 50 per cent. It’s well worth a visit, particularly if you’re in the market [...]

As she mentioned when we spoke to her, she has been working on a new range of laser-cut paper letters which will go on display at the brand new BodyTree villa studios in Khalidiya, Abu Dhabi on 20th of this month. She’s given us this couple [...]
