Blossom Sweets is putting its own spin on a New York pastry sensation.
The Abu Dhabi bakery Blossom Sweets is selling its own variation of the famed New York pastry, the Cronut. The Muroor Road sweet shop now joins Dubai’s delivery-only Butter Dessert Salon in selling the cronut inspired trendy dessert.
Blossom Sweets’ decision to create its own take of the pastry began after the shop’s managing director, Amna Al Hashly, went on a culinary pilgrimage to New York City last month to try the treat at its original home, the Dominique Ansel Bakery.
“We got there at 7am and there was this massive line all the way down the street,” she recalled. “We waited for nearly two hours until we finally had a chance to try it.”
Al Hashly still savours that first bite of her rose-flavoured Cronut. “It tasted so good,” she said. “I would say it’s a mix of an eclair with a donut and croissant. So it’s actually three in one.”
Upon her return to the UAE, Al Hashly got to work with her chef to create a pastry similar to the New York sensation.
The end results are the rose and Nutella with salted nuts variations available at Dh18 a piece.
Al Hashly says she’s happy with the customer feedback. “They said it was not exactly the same, but they did enjoy the taste,” she says. “But this is only the beginning and we want to develop the process even further.”
Al Hashly promises more flavours in the future, with zaatar flavored pastries hitting the shelves soon.
The sweets will be available at Blossom Sweets from 4pm this week before being served from midday onwards from Sunday.
Since appearing in Dominique Ansel Bakery in May, the Cronut was championed by culinary critics and trend-spotters until it became a foody sensation, drawing the attention of the international media.
Imitation versions have spread globally and are now available in Los Angeles, London, Japan and Australia.
