No hoverboards or jetpacks, but here comes a babel fish

Sometimes you come out of an interview or phone call with a company and kind of kick yourself for being a journalist, wishing for a minute that you were as destined to make enormous amounts of cash and change the world as the people you just interviewed.

It has happened to me after speaking with Synchronica, who make software that can turn even the cheapest of low-end mobile phones into a BlackBerry-style mobile email device. I felt the same way after speaking to Content Syndicate in Dubai, who I think are going to absolutely mint money with their online content translation / syndication marketplace.

But I think both those guys get blown out of the water by Sakhr Software, who I spoke with yesterday.

I remember hearing and writing about Sakhr back in my Cairo days - they were a mainstay of the Egyptian tech scene, and always the go-to people when it came to Arabic-language computer technology. But nothing they were doing then was as exciting as this:

What we have here, fellow nerds, is basically a babel fish - almost simultaneous translation between two languages. Give each person a bluetooth headset paired to the phone, and some crazy cool possibilities emerge.

Anyway, Sakhr acquired an American tech company yestoday, in a move to get the talent and IP to enter the mobile applications / voice recognition space. Can you remember the last time a Sillicon Valley tech company got bought out by a Middle Eastern one? In short, this guys are as exciting as anybody in the Arabic technology world today.

I am so pleased that Maddy is doing well - he has put in a lot of hard work building that company.
