Worst headline ever? Maybe. But here's a quick heads up for those who want a fairly capable smartphone but are too cheap to shell out for an iPhone, BlackBerry, etc. Yes, Asa Fitch, I'm looking at you.

HTC have just launched the HTC Snap in the Middle East, and at Dh1599, it is one of the best value handsets on the market. It runs Windows Mobile, which isn't great, but equally isn't horrible. Check out the full review in Smartphone Daily (summary: good, solid, nothing amazing but nothing terrible either). As a touchscreen afficionado with big fat fingers, that keyboard looks quite spacious and accomodating. I'm worried that I would need a special dialling wand to use those tiny little tic-tac sized keyboards on some phones...

I guess it's a good option for those who desperately want a basic WinMo device. For the rest, however, I'd recommend an E63 that costs a fraction of the Snap's price and comes with a keypad that's just as good. The 5800XM and 5530XM are decently priced options for the touch-screen crowd. For those who can't get enough of the red blinky of a Crackberry, the 8320 Curve has still got some magic left and is pretty cheap these days.

Hmm. Not an HTC fan but I confess to being a bit of a cheapskate geek too. And thankfully (considering the recent Etisalat fiasco)! My preference - the Nokia E61i. All the options without the problems.

For me, the Nokia operating system is too hopeless to be considered in a 2009 phone. Terrible media player, hopeless web browser, average email client.

Great value for money though, well made hardware and a zillion different models to choose from....
